Collection: Niello

Niello is a black compound of silver, copper, lead, and sulphur that is fused into engraved lines on metal, then polished flush. It creates a bold black design against bright silver and has been used since antiquity, with a strong 19th century revival.

Niello was made across Europe and, famously, in Russia, where the workshops of Tula produced cases, rings, and small objects. European makers used it on Victorian lockets, buckles, and jewelry, so origins vary by piece.

Handle it gently and avoid abrasive cleaning, since the black inlay can chip or wear. A soft, dry cloth is usually enough, and pieces should be stored separately. We note the condition of the niello on each item before it is offered.
