Pietra dura is a decorative technique that inlays shaped pieces of colored hardstone into a base, usually black marble, to form flowers, birds, or scenes. Associated with Florence, it produces a smooth, polished picture made entirely of natural stone.

Pietra dura fits solid slices of natural stone edge to edge for a smooth surface, while micro mosaic builds images from many tiny glass rods and feels slightly granular. Looking closely at the surface texture is the quickest way to tell them apart.
