This rare English mourning ring from the Victorian (ca1879) era is quite an unusual piece! Crafted in 18kt gold, the ring is richly detailed, and serves as a fine example of the mourning jewelry tradition. Black and white enameled accents decorate the shoulders of the ring and the shield-shaped seal at the center. Multiple cut out "windows" along the shank expose a band of finely woven hair below, the keepsake of a lost loved one. Completing the design are fine etched details that carry around the entire exterior of the setting. A full commemorative inscription with date of death can be found inside the shank, which reads: "M.A. Vincent, née Mourant, died 2nd Jan. 1879." Several English hallmarks are also stamped inside, including: the maker's initials "A&S," the symbol of a crown, "18," the symbol of an anchor (indicating the piece was made in Birmingham), and the date letter "e" (dating the piece to 1879). An exceptional antique mourning ring, it is rich in history and would be perfect for the serious Victorian collector!
Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 7.75. Due to the unique nature of the band, re-sizing is not recommended. The shield signet at the center measures 3/8" tall and wide. The band measures 4mm wide.
Condition: The ring is in excellent antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The enameled accents show some minor signs of surface wear, which is commensurate with age, and normal for an antique piece. However, the surface wear does not detract from the beauty of the design. The woven hair remains intact and is very well preserved.
