Edwardian Sterling & Enamel Cigarette Holder with Box

From the beginning of the Edwardian period up through the early 70s, decorative cigarette holders were a considered an essential fashion accessory for women. The styles varied in style and construction, but usually included an elongated design that included a mouthpiece on one side and an opening on the other to hold a cigarette inside. Designs often incorporated elements such as precious materials, enamels, and gemstones for ornamentation and flair.

This particular cigarette holder from the Edwardian era (ca1910) is a wonderful example of an early fashion accessory! The holder features a slender mouthpiece carved from what appears to be black Bakelite, a material commonly used in cigarette holders at the turn of the century. The holder opening is made of sterling silver has a feminine enameled surface. A textured Guilloché design is visible beneath the pearly white enamel background, and colorful rows of flowers add a lovely pop of color. Stamped on the rim of the holder is "STERLING," and the Bakelite mouthpiece is engraved "AUSTRIA" The cigarette holder comes in its original box lined with faux fur and satin. A perfect item for any collector, this well-preserved piece is a wonderful novelty item!

Measurements: The entire cigarette holder measures approximately 3 3/4" long. The holder opening has a diameter of slightly more than 1/2" across and is 1 1/4" long. The mouthpiece is 3/8" at the widest point and 1/8" at the narrowest point. The box measures 4 1/2" long, 3/4" wide, and 5/8" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the Bakelite mouthpiece, sterling setting, or enameled detail. The box shows normal signs of surface wear for its age, but is still in good condition with a functioning hinge and clasp.
