A fibula pin is an early style of brooch that was used to secure clothing. Dating back to the Middle Ages, fibulae have undergone multiple transformations in style throughout the ages, originally replacing the straight pin. Most fibula pins include multiple components, such as the body, spring, pin, and hinge. The oldest fibulae are ancient artifacts that are crudely formed, but the later variations went on to include precious metals, gemstones, and other forms of decoration. True antique fibula pins are rare finds, and have special collector appeal and value!
This rare brooch from the Early Victorian era (ca1850) is a wonderful example of an antique fibula pin! Crafted in sterling silver, the pin has a decorative design that includes multiple components and colorful gems. At the top is a decorative pinhead, with a tapered spear that that protrudes below. A rounded "bow" link is attached at the top of the spear, to add extra security when fastening to a garment. An ensemble of gems is set throughout the decorative top, including natural pearls, rubies, emeralds, and table-cut diamonds. The beautiful accents add wonderful color and contrast with the darkened silver setting. There are two crab touchmarks indicating the piece's craft in French silver. A fascinating historical piece, it would be perfect for the serious Victorian jewelry collector!
Measurements: The pin measures 2 1/2" in total length. The gemstone pinhead is 1 1/8" tall and 3/4" wide. The round loop link is 3/4" in diameter.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver setting. All of the pin's components are intact, and the pearls and gems are all intact. There is a patina on the surface of the setting that gives a darkened appearance to the silver setting, which is a normal characteristic of antique jewelry.
