The Italian word, “giardinetto,” which translates to “garden,” forms the shape of a vase of flowers or a flower basket, especially suited for brooches but sometimes rings and pendants. The colorful items were created using various gemstones including rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. Popular during the Georgian (ca1714-1837) era, these colorful floral gemstone depictions were known as tokens of love to be exchanged with significant others and friends. A resurgence in popularity occurred during the Art Deco (ca1920) era.
A stunning French paste pin from the Georgian (ca1750) era that perfectly showcases the giardinetto design! This lovely piece is crafted in sterling silver, and forms the shape of a beautiful vase filled with French paste “flowers.” Resting at the ends of curved wirework "stems," the gorgeous crystals create a colorful array and include clear, green and pink paste hues. Each faceted stone has a closed back and rests in a collet setting, catching the light beautifully with every turn. Two curved handles lined with fine beadwork can be found on either side of the vase, adding a wonderful eye-catching appeal, and a large pear-shaped pink French Paste stone is set at the center. Finishing the design are delicate cutouts found throughout the floral arrangement and vase, adding a soft feminine touch and airiness to the design. On the back is the original c-catch clasp which has two small stamps, possibly of French origin. A wonderful and unique gemstone pin, this gorgeous piece would make a perfect addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pin measures approximately 1 1/4" tall, 7/8" wide, and is a little less than 1/4" thick.
Condition: The pin remains in overall great antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. The pin clasp is secure and in good working order. All of the French paste stones are securely set, however, some do show sign of minor surface wear, particularly the largest pink stone at the base. The wear is commensurate with age and none is highly visible when the piece is worn. There is a natural darkened patina to some parts of the surface, which is normal given the age of the piece and adds to it unique beauty.
