Bakelite is a resin material that was produced in the early 1900's and was the first plastic substance made of synthetic components. Initially used for its electrically non-conductive and heat resistant properties in radio and telephone castings, the material was also used in other products such as kids' toys, kitchenware and jewelry. Typically made of bright, beautiful colors, Bakelite has become very collectible over recent years and is appreciated amongst many.
An artistic and fabulous Bakelite horse pin from the Retro (ca1940s) era! This creative piece, which is substantial in size, is crafted out of hand-carved Bakelite and displays a deep brownish red color with brass stud accents. The pin depicts the shape of a galloping horse, with an ornate flowing tail and mane, mid-step legs and a bright yellow eye. Lining the back neck of the horse is a row of brass studs, which are also found along the carved bridle. The surface of the pin features deeply carved details throughout which add wonderful texture and dimension to the design. On the back of the piece is a simple bar pin and clasp, allowing it to be easily fastened to a favorite garment. A very unique Bakelite piece, it is perfect for any collector and would make a fun addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pin measures approximately 2 3/8" long, 3" wide, and is about 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage, chips, or cracks to the carved Bakelite. It appears that there may have been brass studs also set along the hooves of horse, however, the absence of these studs are not noticeable when worn, as the indentations still remain. The pin clasp is secure and in good working condition.
