Old-fashioned and Victorian era watches were generally wound using a small key that would fit into a space at the front of the watch. Watch keys were not only designed for utility, but were often decorative pieces that doubled as pendants or fobs. They are still appreciated for their designs as wearable pieces of jewelry, though they are not generally used for their original winding purpose in the modern day. Antique watch keys have become quite popular among collectors!
A fantastic and unusual watch key pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 14k yellow gold, this 3-dimensional piece forms the shape of a realistic looking rifle. Fantastic carved details include a grip, hammer, cylinder, trigger, and an elongated barrel featuring the watch key opening at the end. Milgrained work and etched "screw heads" add wonderful textural details to the smoothly polished piece and the pendant hangs on an angle from a simple gold bail at the top, perfect for adding to a favorite chain. A gorgeous and unique piece, it would make a fabulous addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 1 1/4” long (including the bail at the top), measures 1 1/4” wide, and 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the watch key pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The bail is intact and in good working condition.
