A very unusual figural brooch from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This artistic piece is crafted in 15kt gold (indicating English origin) and has quite unique artistry. The hollow pin depicts the head of a lovable dog, whose fur and facial features come to life in 3-dimensional carved repousse detail. Fine engraving creates the appearance of thick wavy fur, with two floppy ears that poke out at the top. Completing the design is a smooth nose, sparkling rose cut diamond eyes, and an enameled tongue that protrudes from the open mouth. On the back of the piece is a secure bar pin clasp, perfect for fastening the brooch to a favorite garment. Perfect for the dog lover, this remarkable pin would make a special addition to any antique collection!
Measurements: The brooch measures 1 1/8" in diameter, and is 1/2" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or repousse detail. Both diamond eyes are intact, and the pin clasp on the back fastens securely and is in good working condition. There is a small chip the the red enameling on the tip of the dogs tongue, however, this isn't noticeable when the piece is worn. There is a natural patina on the surface of the gold, which is a normal characteristic of antique jewelry, and adds further depth to the 3-dimensional design.
