Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.
A lovely painted porcelain and Jet pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This gorgeous piece is comprised of an oval shaped porcelain plaque held within a fabulous carved jet frame. The porcelain has the wonderful hand painted image of a sweet winged cherub which is resting his chin on his hand and a soft gaze on his face, as though deep in thought. The color and detail is lovely, and the portrait is simple yet beautiful. Solid black Jet encases the painted porcelain portrait. The wide border has a convex design and carries a fantastic roman key pattern which is hand carved into the surface, carrying around the entire frame. On the back of the piece is a simple c-catch pin clasp and the smooth Jet backing. It's a versatile piece that would look lovely worn pinned to your favorite jacket!
Measurements: The pin measures 1 7/8" tall, 1 5/8" wide, and is 1/2" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the painted porcelain portrait or to the carved Jet setting. The pin clasp is secure and in good working condition.
