The earliest known use of shell for cameo carving was during the 15th and 16th centuries. Before that, cameos were carved from hardstone. The Renaissance cameos are typically white on a grayish background and were carved from the shell of a mussel or cowry. In the mid 18th century, explorations revealed new shell varieties. Helmet shells from the West Indies, and queen conch shells from the Bahamas arrived in Europe, thus sparking a big increase in the number of cameos that were carved from shells.
A large hand carved cameo pin/pendant from the Art Nouveau (ca1900s) era! Crafted in 14k yellow gold, this pin/pendant features a large, oval-shaped cameo. The hand-carved cameo depicts a beautiful woman waving a handkerchief gracefully at a passing airplane. The woman is depicted with short, flowing curls, and is adorned in loose garments. A shower of blooming-florals are showering down from the airplane. The cameo is surrounded by a lovely frame, which incorporates dainty filigree-detailing, and wing-motif borders. The backside of the large pin/pendant features a simple pin clasp and a hidden bail. The pin clasp is marked with a "14K" purity mark. An exquisite example of Art Nouveau-era craftsmanship, this pin/pendant would make a striking addition to any cameo collection!
Measurements: The pin has a height of 1 3/4" and a width of 2 1/4".
Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear there is no apparent damage to the cameo or to the gold frame. The pin clasp is secure, and in good working condition, and the hidden bail is intact and in working order.
