Bakelite is a resin material that was produced in the early 1900's and was the first plastic substance made of synthetic components. Initially used for its electrically non-conductive and heat resistant properties in radio and telephone castings, the material was also used in other products such as kids' toys, kitchenware and jewelry. Typically made of bright, beautiful colors, Bakelite has become very collectible over recent years and is appreciated amongst many.
An artistic and fabulous Bakelite hand pin from the Retro (ca1940) era! This creative piece is crafted out of hand-carved Bakelite and displays a deep butterscotch color with rich, painted red accents. The pin depicts the shape of an elegant hand, with long, slightly curved fingers adorned with bright red "nail polish." Resting along the wrist, is a lovely bracelet featuring a painted red surface and deeply carved round cutouts which add wonderful texture and dimension to the design. On the back of the piece is a simple gold bar pin and clasp, allowing it to be easily fastened to a favorite garment. A very unique Bakelite piece, it is perfect for any collector and would make a fun addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pin measures approximately 2 5/8" long, 1 1/4" wide, and is about 3/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage, chips, or cracks to the carved Bakelite. The red accent paint shows some slight wear along the very edge of the fingertips, and along one edge of the bracelet, however due to its location, it is barely noticeable when worn. The pin clasp is secure and in good working condition.
