Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.
A fabulous jet pendant necklace from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! Crafted in 14k rosy gold, the "chain" of this necklace is comprised of alternating gold spring rings and oblong jet links. The surface of the jet links features a ribbed design, which further adds to the unique appeal of the piece. The center of the chain features a large spring ring clasp, which connects to an oval-shaped locket. The front side of the locket is adorned with a calligraphic "O", which is formed by bead-set seed pearls and gold detailing. The back side of the locket features a compartment to store a sentimental photograph or memento. The compartment is covered by a glass frame. An absolutely spectacular example of jet jewelry, this necklace would make a fantastic addition to any antique jewelry collection!
Measurements: The necklace has a total length of 15". Each jet link has a length of 1 3/8" and a width of 3/8". The locket has a length of 1 3/4" and a width of 1 3/8".
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant necklace is necklace. There is no apparent damage to the gold or jet links, and the spring ring clasp is secure and in working order. All of the pearls are securely set, and the glass panel which backs the locket is secure and intact.
