A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. A spinner or swivel fob has two or more sides, which can be turned or swiveled within a moveable bracket. This allows the wearer a choice as to which side is displayed prominently!
An unusual spinner fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era! It hangs from a lovely 14kt gold repousse spinner, which forms a wide handle. At the base is a rich orange carnelian ball, which has a flattened side with a carved intaglio seal. A steel bar attachment is riveted into each side of the carnelian, allowing it to spin and swivel. The carved intaglio image displays a set of initials in antique script, shown in mirror image. A large gold "O" ring is attached to the top of the fob, allowing to hang easily from a favorite chain. A unique Victorian piece, it is perfect for any fob collector!
Measurements: The entire piece hangs approximately 1 1/2" long (from the top of the "O" ring to the bottom edge of the spinner), and measures 1 3/8" wide. The carnelian ball measures 3/4" in size.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. There is some light surface wear to the gold and steel frame, including a small pinhole puncture at the side of the handle, which is not noticeable when worn. The carnelian stone has light surface wear, but no significant chips or scratches. It remains securely riveted in place. A natural patina gives a darkened appearance to the setting, which is a normal characteristic of antique jewelry.
