Reverse carved crystal is a technique created by cutting rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand painted. From the front, the picture appears to be almost three-dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs.
A gorgeous reverse carved crystal dog pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This wonderful piece is crafted in 14kt yellow gold and adorns a hand-painted image of a West Highland "Westie" terrier on the back of a large rock quartz crystal cabochon. The detailed picture depicts the lovable dog's face, including fluffy white fur, two pointed ears, and a light blue ribbon tied around its neck. The cabochon rests atop a beautiful mother of pearl background, which lends a shimmery, iridescent quality to the design. Finishing the design are 4 prongs that hold the crystal in place, with each one created by a trio of polished bars. The back of the piece is smoothly polished and it hangs from a fluted bail at the top. Perfect for pairing with a favorite chain, this piece will delight any "Westie" or dog lover, and make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs about 1 1/8" long, including the bail at the top, and measures a little more than 3/4" in diameter and is 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to yellow gold setting. The bail is secure and in good working order. Due to age, there is very minor wear to the hand-painted image on the back of the crystal, however it is hardly noticeable when worn.
