In Greek mythology, a Charis is one of several Charites (Graces), goddesses of charm, beauty, nature, fertility, and human creativity. They ordinarily numbered three, from youngest to oldest: Aglaia (Splendo), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer), hence the term "Three Graces." They were usually considered to be the daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, but also said to be daughters of Dionysus and Aphrodite or Helios and Aegle.

This large, gorgeous cameo pin is from the Victorian (ca1880) era, and depicts the image of the "Three Graces" carved from shell. The cameo is bezel set within a fancy hand-etched  frame crafted in 15kt gold. All three of the female figures are all hand-carved with exquisite detail, including flowing dresses, swaying hair, and feminine facial features. Decorating the frame is a fine gold rope border, and a large 3-dimensional bow at the top. On the back of the piece is a bar pin, as well as a safety chain for added security. This impressive cameo is magnificent in person, and would make an outstanding addition to any antique collection!

Measurements: The cameo measures approximately 2" long and approximately 1 1/2" wide. The overall size of the brooch measures approximately 2 1/2" long, 2" wide and a little less than 1/2" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the brooch is excellent. There are no apparent marks in the cameo or the gold. The clasp fits snug and secure and in good working condition.
