A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket.
A wonderful agate fob from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! This beautiful and sentimental piece is crafted in gold-fill and is substantial in size. At the base of the fob is a flat, transparent piece of agate, which could be carved with a personal insignia or crest. The body of the fob is highly-detailed and features swirling, foliage, and floral-motif engravings. The top of the fob features a hollow opening, which would allow the wearer to attach the piece to a large, gold-filled chain. A bold piece, this fob would make a lovely addition to any Victorian-era jewelry collection!
Measurements: The fob stands about 2" tall and measures 1 3/8" at its widest point. The base of the fob has a width of 1 3/8" and a height of 1 1/4".
Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold-filled setting. The agate stone is intact and free of any chips or scratches.
