A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket.
A wonderful chalcedony fob from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! This beautiful and sentimental piece is crafted in gold fill and is substantial in size. At the base of the fob is an flat, pale blue slice of chalcedony, which could be carved with an personal insignia or crest. The body of the fob has a heavily carved surface featuring a rich floral motif and soft flourishes. At the top of the fob's handle is an open ring etched with more floral patterns, perfect for hanging the piece from a chain or charm bracelet. Antique fobs are particularly popular among collectors and this one would make a perfect addition to any collection!
Measurements: The fob stands about 2 1/2" tall, including the handle and ring. The base of the fob measures 1 1/4" long and just over 1" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold filled setting. The chalcedony seal is intact and free of noticeable chips or scratches.
