Antique jewelry made from hand-carved bone was very popular during the Victorian era (ca 1880). Bone is a hard material from the skeleton of most vertebrate species, but the variety mainly used in jewelry is from such animals as the wild boar or wild hog. It was used to imitate ivory, which was more expensive.

A spectacular hand-carved bone flower locket and necklace from the Victorian (ca 1880) era! A gorgeous hand carved locket hangs from the chain of roses, all hand carved from bone. The chain has 8 intricately detailed rosebuds, 4 on either side which are connected by 3 small round links. The locket has a large raised rosebud on top, and is hand carved with great detail and depth. The rosebud slides open to reveal the base of the locket which is also ornately carved with small flowers and leaves. There is a small frame inside to hold a photo or possibly a small trinket. The threaded barrel clasp is original. This necklace is all hand carved and a true work of art!

Measurements: The chain measures approximately 19 1/4" long. The locket measures approximately 2 1/2" long, 1 3/4 " wide and 7/8" thick. Each rosebud measures approximately 1" long.

Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent with, amazingly, no apparent chips in the rosebuds, locket or links. The color varies slightly due to age, which gives this piece its special appeal!
