A simply outstanding rock crystal and gemstone insect pendant from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! This fabulous piece is crafted out of a relatively large rock crystal plaque, which is held within a vibrant 14kt yellow gold frame. The entire back of the round crystal is faceted, along with the border along the front, creating a fabulous prism effect as light passes through with every turn. A spectacular gemstone encrusted flying insect is riveted into the center of the front of the piece, its body outlined in yellow gold. A faceted oval-shaped garnet representing the "body" rests below a round ruby and two delicate ruby eyes that adorn the head. Each wing is decorated with a vertical row of two vibrant green emerald stones that flank a ruby in the center. The colorful gemstones create a marvelous eye-catching appeal that pops against the crystal prism background. Resting at the top of the piece is a large fluted and hinged bail, perfect for hanging from a favorite chain. A fantastic piece, it would make a striking addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 1 7/8" long. The rock crystal plaque measures about 1 3/8" in diameter and is approximately 5/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting or to the faceted rock quartz crystal plaque. The plaque is securely set, however it has the ability to move slightly within the bezel. Additionally, the gemstones are securely set, however, the round ruby on the head displays a small chip, but due to its size, color and location, it is barely noticeable when worn. The bail is secure and in good working condition.
