Victorian Silver Shakudo Mixed Metals Link Bracelet
SKU:39246
Shakudo is the use of mixed metal alloys and was originally used in Japanese armor and swords. Artisans would sometimes remove the Shakudo plaques from the armor and incorporate it into jewelry or art. It has become very collectible and quite unusual.
This beautiful bracelet from the Victorian (ca1880) era is an incredible example of the Shakudo art form! The unusual design is comprised of 8 elongated silver links, each with its own unique mixed metals design. Multiple Japanese motifs are depicted among the links. Included in the ensemble are nature-inspired designs with kingfisher birds and praying mantis bugs, scenic boating and village designs, and portrait links that include an archer and a Japanese man. The mixed hues of the various metals look wonderful against the dark matte background, and bring each image to life! In between each link are jump ring connectors, ending with a push clasp disguised within the final link. Stamped underneath the clasp is "SILVER." A safety chain provides additional security when worn. A wonderful work of art, this gorgeous and very unusual multi-link Shakudo bracelet is quite substantial, and would make a marvelous addition to any collection!Measurements: The bracelet measures 7" long, and would fit nicely on a medium/average sized wrist. The Shakudo links vary in size, with the largest measuring approximately 1 3/8" long, 5/8" wide and 3/8" thick. The smallest link measures 1 3/8" long, 3/8" wide and 1/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver setting. All of the Shakudo plaques are intact and securely mounted above the silver frames. Some of the links show signs of minor surface wear, which is normal for antique jewelry, and does not detract from the beauty of the design. The clasp and safety chain are secure and in good working condition. There is a natural patina on the surface of the setting, which is a common characteristic of antique silver.
