French paste is a vintage jewelry term used to describe the practice of using faceted cut glass, cut in the shape of a real gemstone, instead of using gems. This process, which was developed in the 1700s, created the look of a sparkling gemstone or diamond but cost much less than real stones.

This sparkling French paste star necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era is a real beauty! The large pendant, which is crafted in sterling silver, forms a striking 5-point star design, and adorns eleven bright French paste stones. Each closed back paste stone is bezel set and has multiple facets, creating a beautiful sparkle that stands out dramatically within the antiqued silver setting. The stones vary slightly in size and color, with the largest at the center, and delicate beadwork rests within the spaces in between each stone and at the points, completing the look perfectly.  The star pendant has a swing-down bail on the back and attaches to a simple sterling chain which is stamped "STERLING." A spectacular star from the Victorian era, it looks breathtaking on and would make a dazzling addition to any collection!

Measurements: The necklace measures approximately 18.5 inches long. The star pendant measures approximately 1 3/4” tall and wide, and is 1/4" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver setting, and all of the French paste stones are intact. The spring ring clasp is secure and in good working condition. There is a natural patina that gives the piece a darkened silver look, which is typical of a Victorian piece and adds depth to the design.
