A fantastic sterling locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This unusual piece is substantial in size and beautifully decorated. The surface displays an intricately layered industrial motif, which has 3-dimensional overlay elements and beadwork decorating its face. When opened, it reveals a hollow interior where special photographs could be displayed inside. The reverse side of the piece is left simple and smooth, where a set of initials or personalized message could be engraved if desired. Attached to the top is a large bail that is stamped with "Sterling Silver". The generous size of the bail is perfect for accommodating the included substantial Victorian chain, which exhibits an intricate pattern of twisted ribbed links. A very special keepsake piece, this magnificent locket would make a striking addition to any antique collection!
Measurements: The locket hangs 2 5/8" long (including the bail), measures 1 1/2" wide, and 5/8" thick. The chain measures approximately 23" long.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting or applied details. The hinge is in good working condition, and the locket opens easily and snaps securely shut. The bail at the top is securely attached and the chain is fully intact with a functional clasp. There is a natural patina on the surface of the silver setting, which is a normal characteristic of antique jewelry, and adds further depth to the 3-dimensional details.
