A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket.
A sterling silver fob from the Victorian era (ca1880)! This fob is rich with detail and comprised of an elaborate framework design, with swirled accents and engraved texture. At the base of the silver fob is a smooth onyx seal. Completing the design is a twisted wire ring at the top, perfect for hanging the piece from a favorite Victorian chain. A few small hallmarks are stamped on the back, including the initials "MB" "925" and two different symbols. A unique Victorian piece, it is perfect for the antique fob collector!
Measurements: The piece hangs 1 6/8" long, (including the bail at the top), measures 7/8" wide, and 5/8" thick.
Condition: The piece is in very good antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. The onyx seal intact and the ring at the top of the piece is securely attached. There is a natural patina on the surface of the setting, which is a normal characteristic of antique jewelry, and adds further depth to the design.
