A wonderful equestrian-inspired compilation piece from the Edwardian era! A 14kt yellow gold pocket watch by J.E. Caldwell & Co. (ca1915) hangs from a late Victorian horseshoe pin (ca1910). The large, 3-dimensional pin is made of 15kt rose gold (indicating English origin) and features 7 raised platinum studs on the surface depicting nails (always 7 for good luck!). Two strands of rose gold chain hang from the inside of the horseshoe and meet at a 14kt watch swivel clasp in the center, from which the removable pocket watch is hung. A gold bar pin on the back of the horseshoe allows it to be easily fastened to a favorite garment. The face of the pocket watch reads "J.E. CALDWELL & CO." and has black ticks and hands above a gold background. The winder can be found at the top below the handle. A small tab at the base of the watch latches the front of the watch for security. The back of the piece can be opened at the seam, allowing access to the watch movement inside. The numbers "18120584" are stamped within the movement itself, while the gold encasement bears multiple hallmarks inside. Included among them are "PAT. MAY 10 1915" "DUBOIS WC. CO." "14K" "0.585 FINE GUARANTEED" "72283" and a few small hand-etched markings. The rose and yellow gold combination and platinum accents give this design a subtle, yet lovely mixed metals appearance. A very striking piece, it is perfect for a collector and would appeal to the equestrian enthusiast!
Measurements: The entire piece hangs 3 1/8" long from the top of the horseshoe to the base of the watch. The horseshoe itself measures 1 3/8" tall and 1 1/8" wide. The pocket watch measures 1 1/4" long from the top of its winder handle to its base, has a 1" diameter, and is 1/4" thick. The face of the watch has a 5/8" diameter. The overall pennyweight of the piece is 11.4 dwt.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or platinum accents. The pin clasp and watch swivel clasp both fasten securely and are in good working condition. The glass watch face is free of scratches, and the winder, latch, and seams are in good condition. The hands are both intact, and the movement is undamaged. Watches of this era should be cleaned and oiled periodically to keep them in working order.
