Piqué was a decorative style popular in the 18th and 19th century and entailed inlaying a fine pattern of gold or silver into tortoise shell. The metal would be heated to a very high temperature and then pressed directly into the surface of the tortoise shell. Once cool, the tortoise secures around the metal. Now a banned material, Antique tortoise shell jewelry has become very collectible.

This pendant is a beautiful example of the piqué art form! Made of a very rich, dark tortoise shell, the piece is from the Victorian period (ca1880) and absolutely wonderful. The pendant itself has been hand carved into the shape of a cross which is particularly large in size. The front surface has an exquisite pique design which lines all four arms of the cross, giving texture and depth to the piece. The tortoise cross is truly a work of art and in beautiful condition. It would make a perfect addition to any collection!

Measurements: The pendant measures 2 1/8" tall, 1 1/4" wide and has a depth of a little less than 1/4".

Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the tortoise shell or the inlay gold.
