Limoges, France is a city that is known worldwide for its excellence in the production of fine porcelain. The history surrounding the tradition dates back to the 18th century, but continues even in the present day. Authentic Limoges porcelain must adhere to very exacting standards, and includes multiple steps before reaching completion. There are four main phases: Casting, Enameling, Cooking, and Decoration. During the enameling phase, the porcelain is soaked in a steep bath of cobalt oxide, resulting in a saturated vivid blue color. The cooking phase produces the distinctive glazed appearance. The final decoration phase incorporates metallic elements using brush work, stencil, stamping, and transfers. Although Limoges porcelain is often imitated, the authentic pieces are not only valuable, but exceptionally beautiful!
This stunning locket from the late Victorian era (ca1900) is a wonderful example of Limoges porcelain! This unusual piece is crafted in 14kt gold, and features a Limoges porcelain plaque that rests at the center. The rich cobalt blue color of the porcelain is decorated with an artistic portrait of a beautiful young woman. Her youthful face and soft brown hair are framed by a decorative blue bonnet and matching dress. The fabric of her garments has a wonderful metallic appearance in vibrant blue and gold. The reverse side of the plaque is marked "FRANCE." Surrounding the portrait is a wonderful gold border, which is etched with flowing swirls and flourishes. The locket is hinged in two places, and opening with a latch clasp at the side to reveal a unique 3-compartment feature! The design allows for multiple photographs to be kept inside at a time. At the top of the piece is a simple gold bail, perfect for hanging the pendant from a favorite gold chain. A very special keepsake piece, it would make a lovely addition to any Limoges porcelain or jewelry collection!
Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 1 3/8" long (including the ring at the top), has a 1 1/2" diameter, and measures 3/16" thick. When opened, the round spaces for photographs have an approximate 1 1/8" diameter.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or Limoges porcelain plaque, which remains intact and securely set. The multi compartment feature is in good working condition, and the latch clasp and bail are secure.
