Italian carvers began to use shells for their cameo creations in the early 1880s. Most commonly, cameos portrayed the faces or images of Romanesque women. They often had upswept hairstyles, and some were even adorned with jewelry, including real gemstones set within the cameo image. The cameos usually depicted the portrait of the "idealized" woman, or gods and goddesses from mythology.
A beautiful cameo pendant and chain from the Art Deco (ca1920-1930) era! Crafted in 14kt white gold, this beautiful necklace is comprised of a lovely filigree pendant that hangs from a complimentary chain. A hand-carved shell cameo rests at the center, surrounded by the elegant filigree wirework border. The image depicts the profile of a young woman, who has flowers resting in her hair and at her shoulder, and a diamond necklace hangs around her neck. The delicate diamond rests in a box setting, which is riveted into the center of the plaque. The pendant hangs from a complimentary filigree bail, and the matching chain fastens with a spring ring clasp in the back. It looks lovely when worn and would make a wonderful addition to any cameo collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs 1 1/2" long (including the bail), is 3/4" at the widest point, and has a depth of 1/4". The chain measures approximately 15" long.
Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the white gold filigree setting, bail, or chain. The shell cameo and the diamond are both intact. The spring ring clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition.
