"Plique-à-Jour" is a French term that means "braid letting in daylight". The term refers to the technique in which enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing. This allows light to shine through the transparent or translucent enamel and form a beautiful stained glass like appearance.
During the 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced what is referred to as "archaeological revival jewelry," or "Egyptian revival jewelry." The initial Egyptian Revival period flourished from the 1820s onward, and was inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics.
A fabulous plique-à-jour pendant from the Art Deco (ca1920) era! This wonderful piece is made of sterling silver and depicts a lovely plique-à-jour winged-scarab design. The beetle incorporates stunning, vibrant blue tones that further add to the allure of the piece. The front and back of the beetle's wings are decorated with six small diamonds held within shared prong settings. Hanging from the base of the scarab on a small jump ring is a dainty pearl. Additionally, the pendant is attached to a sterling silver chain on each wing. A unique and colorful pendant, it would make the perfect addition to any collection!
Measurement: The pendant hangs 1” long, and is 1 1/4" at the widest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling setting. All of the stones are intact and the bail is secure and in good working condition.
