Edwardian 14kt & Platinum Checkerboard & Garnet Locket Necklace

This mixed metals locket from the Edwardian (ca1900) era is simply marvelous! Made of 14kt rose gold and platinum, the necklace is comprised of a fabulous double-sided locket that hangs from a twisted rope chain. The locket is square in shape and wonderfully decorated on both sides. The entire surface of one side has an attractive checkerboard pattern, which alternates between 14kt rose gold and platinum squares. The opposing side of the locket features a beautiful garnet stone in the center, which is held within an 8 point star-shaped setting. The garnet stone is surrounded by an engraved inscription which reads, "1ST PRIZE FOR COMPOSITION AND ELOCUTION AWARDED TO Jennie Lo. O'Mara, ST. ALOYSIUS ACADEMY". Two outer edges of the locket are adorned by a gold bar that loops at the top corner to form a clover-like shape, from which the locket can be hung. The piece opens at a small push clasp at the side of the locket, revealing space to store a favorite photograph inside. The inside of the locket is also stamped "14K." The chain has a twisted rope pattern which alternates between rose gold and platinum sections. A hanging toggle clasp with a complimentary mixed metals design hangs beside the locket. The necklace fastens with a two-tone spring ring clasp in the back. A wonderful and very artistic piece, it is perfect for any locket lover and looks especially beautiful worn on its complimentary chain!

Measurements: The locket hangs 1 3/4" long, is 1/4" thick, and measures 1" wide on each side. The chain measures 23" long. The toggle measures 1 3/8" long and hangs from a 1" strand of chain. The total weight of the chain and locket is 73 grams.

Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold or platinum and the garnet stone is intact. The locket opens easily and fastens securely, and the push clasp is in good working condition.
