Toshikane was a Japanese company from Arita, Japan that fabricated porcelain buttons, jewelry, and other ceramic pieces, dating back to as early as the 1940's. Each Toshikane design has a distinctly Japanese look and feel, incorporating elements such as Asian fans, the 7 Lucky Gods, and exotic bird and flower designs into the work. Usually set in silver, the porcelain pieces are intricately hand painted in a variety of vibrant colors. Because they are no longer fabricated, Toshikane pieces are now a rare find and are highly collectible.
A fantastic vintage Toshikane pendant from the Vintage (ca1950s) era! This charming pendant depicts a stunning hand-painted porcelain seahorse backed with a sterling silver base. The seahorse is intricately detailed, displaying a vivid greenish blue color with metallic gold accents painted along the fins and face. Textured features on the front surface of the seahorse represent individual scales and fins and the creature has large, wide eyes, a bright colorful body, and a tail which curls inwards towards its painted white belly. Attached to the back is a hidden bail, which would allow the piece to be attached to a favorite chain. The back of the seahorse is stamped with Japanese maker's marks and the word "JAPAN". A fun and whimsical pair Toshikane pendant, the piece has excellent detail and would make a special addition to any collection!
Measurements: The seahorse pendant measures approximately 1" tall, 3/4" wide, and a little less than 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Aside from normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting or to the painted porcelain.
