French paste is a Vintage jewelry term used to describe the practice of placing foil underneath faceted cut glass, which is cut in the shape of a real gemstone. This process, which was developed in the 1700's, created the look of a sparkling gemstone or diamond but cost much less than real gems.
A stunning piece from the late Victorian period (ca1900). This beautiful hand carved cameo depicts the head of Medusa and is surrounded by two rows of French paste and an enameled border. The pin is set in sterling silver and has 9kt yellow gold accents. There is a 9kt gold border around the cameo and 9kt gold flowers within the enameling. The enameling is a beautiful deep cobalt blue color and is in excellent condition considering the age of the piece. On the back is the original "c-catch". It is a stunning piece and would make a great addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pin measures approximately 1 7/8" tall, 1 1/2" wide and 1/2" at the thickest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the cameo or metal and all of the stones are intact. The c-catch clasp is in good working condition.
